Sour Cream Sugar Cookies

1½ or 2 C sugar
1egg
1tvanilla
1tbaking powder
1/4tsalt
1Cshortening
1Csour cream
4¾ C flour
1tsoda

red or green crystal sugar
Combine sugar, shortening, and egg; beat until light and fluffy. Stir in sour cream and vanilla. Combine flour, soda, baking powder and salt. Add to creamed mixture. Chill dough 2-3 hours. Divide dough into thirds. Work with one third at a time, keeping remaining dough refrigerated.
Roll out on a lightly floured surface to 1/8” thick. Cut into desired shapes. (Sprinkle with sugar crystals if desired). Bake on ungreased cookie sheet at 350 for 10 minutes or less. These can be iced too.
